Light Bulb Aquarium

A few days ago I showed you how to hollow out a light bulb. But now what to do with that empty bulb?ย  Today I want to show you a way to transform that bulb into an aquarium. This will look super cute in any room and is very easy to assemble and maintain.

Attention: Even though it’s called Light Bulb Aquarium a light bulb is not a good home for fish! You can have plants in it and maybe a snail. But please never put a fish in it. It’s way too small and it would be cruel.

Macrame light bulb hanger

First I’ll show you how to make a very easy macrame hanger for the bulb.

Light bulb

All you need is yarn and scissors.

Light bulb

First you cut 8 stripes of yarn in the same length.

Light bulb

Second you make a knot to combine all strands.

Light bulb

Than you make a knot about 1 inch from the main knot in two strands at a time.

Now you’ll do the same but with yarn strands next to the ones you knot. (I hope this makes sence)

Now you can insert the light bulb.

For the Light Bulb Aquarium I used some Aquarium sand from my actual tank. Also I used a small marimo moss ball from there as well. You can get those in most aquaristic stores but you can also order them online. The little piece of wood is thrift wood. I think theย Light Bulb Aquarium could also look great with some shells in it.

A little snail from my main tank also sneaked into the bulb. So now I have to take care of it ๐Ÿ™‚ Some of the water might evaporate over time so you just have to add more. And that’s about it! Get creative and please share your results with me. I would love to see what kind of Light Bulb Aquarium you came up with!

P.S and I super respect you for warning everyone NOT to put a fish in that. I feel that now-a-days it’s often the case of ‘Can it hold water? Yes. Lets put a fish in it.’

Very cute idea to make a macrame holder! And I love your tute on hollowing out the bulb. I’ve seen other tutes, but yours seems much clearer! ๐Ÿ™‚ Lisa

      Hi Maarten,
I would suggest not to hang it into a very sunny spot. This would make algea grow and also the water would heat up too much and evaporate. I think it’s fine just to exchange some of the water now and then. Just pour it out and carefully fill it up with some fresh water. I hope that helps you ๐Ÿ™‚

        Thanks for replying ๐Ÿ™‚
Could I put a snail or shrimp in it or is it too small for that?

A snail is fine but I wouldn’t put a shrimp in it. Especially since tou should not have only one shrimp. They need to be in a group. If you put a snail in it you have to feed it ๐Ÿ™‚
