Hiking Tips For Mallorca

Chris and I took a week off work to go on a hiking adventure at Majorca, Spain. Majorca also called Mallorca belongs to the Balearic Islands and is also the biggest. Its located in the Mediterranean. We stayed at the Cooee Hotel in Calla Bona right at the Ocean. We took the week before Easter off so we got two extra free days due to the holiday. Smart, eh? Also Mallorca in March is less crowded and don’t be fooled by S’Arenal and what you think you know of that island. Actually Majorca is pretty popular for hikes and bike tours in spring and fall when it’s not too hot to get active. If you’re lucky you also get to enjoy the almond blossoms which show between February and March.

We went on a couple of hikes which I’m going to talk about in this post. Also I’m going to give you a restaurant recommendation that we quiet enjoyed and that wasn’t too touristy or too expensive.

Hikes in Mallorca:

The first hike we did was close to Cala Bona at the east coast of Mallorca. It was a super easy hike along dunes and the coast which led to a small fort named Castell de N’Amer.

Punta de N'Amer - Majorca

Actually the whole area is even a half island which is called Punta de N’Amer. You can walk into the fort for free and climb on top for a really nice view. At the fort is also a small restaurant. The hike takes about 2 hours and is about 5KM long.

Next we tried a more difficult hike in the Mallorca’s world heritage of Tramantura. We started at Biniaraix and began a wonderful hike in between olive fields up a hill. Just follow the signs saying Camí des Barranc. The hike is about 9,5KM long and takes about 4 hours but you also have to climb 870 meters high in total. It’s a little exhausting.

Here we saw a lot of other hikers. Unfortunately we started around noon which was a bit too late as we couldn’t make it to the top but we stopped halfway at a beautiful waterfall with super clear water. We loved that hike and consider doing it again another time.

After climbing up mountains we decided to try a total different hike towards a bay called Vall de Bóquer. You start the tour in Port de Pollença at a parking lot towards Formentor. The whole walk is roughly 5km. Would recommend to do it on a cloudy day as there is barely any shadow on that route.

Vall de Bóquer - Majorca

You can only reach it by boat or by hiking down there. It was not really a difficult walk as it’s mostly straight but towards the end it gets a bit rocky and rough. What we loved most about that hike was the wild goats you could hear and see along the tour.

The bay is really small and has a rocky beach. The water was crystal clear and had a really pretty blue hue. There where hardly any other hikers out so we basically had the bay to ourself. If you’re looking for an easy 2 1/2 hour hike to an awesome spot do this one! We loved it!

Vall de Bóquer Bay - MajorcaThe last hike we did in Mallorca was in Buñola. Here we started in the beautiful town of Buñola and went up a hill with an amazing view from the top. The area is called Penyals d’Honor. Unfortunately I’m a little afraid of heights so Chris took most of the shots as I couldn’t look at the view without getting nervous. But man doesn’t it look pretty on the picture?

It’s was quite an adventureous hike which passed a house that is build in a cave. It looked like out of a fairytale. The hike takes about 4 1/2h. If you take a couple breaks to take pictures and have a drink it’s about 5h in total. The top of the mountain is actually the halfway point so it’s the perfect opportunity to have a break and a snack. Lots of hikers did that up there. On the way down you pass a house that is built into a hill called Sa Cova which was build in the 14 hundreds.

The whole hike is about 12 KM long and there’s a lot of shadow on the tour. Actually it’s even a hike that is suitable for older kids as well. We even saw a couple varying a small child in a special backpack up that hill! #parentinggoal

Mallorca Restaurant:

Asador Es Theatres in Ses Salines. Here you can get great mallorquin cuisine for a reasonable price. We ordered some tapas and both a dish from the charcoal grill. Chris ordered chicken and I got the octopod pictured below.  It was so delicious! And look at that presentation! We spend a little less than 40€ which was absolutely ok for the quality and amount we ordered. I also had a flan for dessert which was super yummy as well. Ses Salines is also a really picturesque town to visit.  We can totally recommend a visit to this gem of a restaurant on Majorca.
