Basic Porridge Recipe

Hi everyone,

I hope you all had a great weekend so far. My week was so busy with work that I was craving something easy for breakfast today. And what better is there as to make porridge aka oatmeal? It’s so easy, fast, filling and delicious. This basic porridge recipe only takes about 5-10 minutes to prepare. Porridge is a great oats based dish that you can eat savory and sweet. We like it sweet around here and like to spice it up once in a while. I might even add some varations at some point.

Let’s make some porridge shall we?

Basic Porridge Recipe

For this recipe I’ll use water which is the more traditional way of preparing porridge but some people prefer it with milk.


  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup water
  • pinch of salt

First add the oats into a non-stick pan. Toast them a bit until they get slighty golden brownish. Add a pinch of salt. This will add a lot to the flavour of the porridge. Now add the water and stir continously till it has the consistency you like. The stirring is important to achieve the creaminess porridge is known for. You know it’s done when it has a thick and sticky but pourable consistency.

You basic porridge is done! We like to serve it with brown sugar that we sprinkle on top. Doing this while the porridge is still hot will make the sugar melt and turn into a yummy sweet sauce. Sometimes we like to add honey or steamed apples with cinammon. As I said the varations are endless. Be creative with the topings. I’d love to hear which way you like to eat your oatmeal.
